Track your cycle without a period with Clue

If you don’t have a period but still want to track cyclical changes in your body–this is for you.

Top things to know about how to use Clue without a period:

  • We’ve built a solution for people who don’t experience menstrual bleeding but who still want to track cyclical changes and recurring health experiences in the Clue app.

  • You can now start a new “cycle” without needing to track a period. You’re in control of the cycle you want to track and how.

  • Whether you’ve had a procedure like a hysterectomy, use hormonal birth control that stops bleeding, or are on hormone therapy post-menopause, Clue Tracking is for you.

  • Tracking allows you to notice trends in your mood, energy, and other health experiences. These insights can help you make informed choices about your well-being.

You asked, we listened.

Introducing a new way to track without periods

At Clue, we know that reproductive health extends beyond just periods. Some people don’t experience menstrual bleeding due to surgery, hormonal medications, gender transition, or natural changes in life stages, like post-menopause. Now it’s possible for people who don’t have periods to still track their health experiences and understand patterns over time.

A quick note on the term “cycle”: We use “cycle” here to refer not only to a typical menstrual cycle but also to hormone-induced cycles that occur without menstruation. This lets us support everyone in tracking patterns unique to their bodies and health needs.

Who this mode is for

Clue Tracking is for those who don’t have periods but still want to track recurring experiences. It may be right for you if you:

  • Use hormonal birth control that suppresses bleeding, such as continuous-use pills, patches, and rings, IUDs, shots, or implants

  • Are a transgender man, woman, or nonbinary person who does not experience bleeding but wants to track how you feel with hormone therapy

  • Are post-menopausal and on hormone therapy (HT), experiencing cyclical changes

  • No longer have periods due to a procedure like a hysterectomy or endometrial ablation

  • Have conditions like MRKH Syndrome or other factors affecting your menstrual cycle

Track your own cycle, your way

With this new mode, you can start a new “cycle” whenever it makes sense for you, with no need to track a period. Some people may choose to start a new cycle whenever they notice a shift in their physical or emotional experiences, marking a fresh point to start tracking recurring patterns. For example, you might start a new cycle each time you change your contraceptive patch or ring, begin a fresh pack of pills, take a new dose of medication, such as a testosterone shot, or when you adjust your hormone therapy dose.

Others might prefer to set a consistent start date, like the 1st of each month, for easier month-to-month comparisons. Starting a new cycle at these moments—after a medication dose, following a noticeable symptom shift, or on a fixed date—gives you the flexibility to log your experiences in a way that makes sense for your health journey. This can help you monitor how changes in treatments or routines affect your well-being over time and spot trends that help guide your health decisions.

Each time you start a new tracking cycle is a chance to understand meaningful changes on your terms. You can start the cycle whenever you want to make it work for you.

Examples of custom cycles from the Clue Community

Some people have a clear understanding of when to start a new cycle, while others might find it a bit challenging. Here are a few examples of how some of our users determine the right time to begin a new cycle:

Why track without a period?

1. Become an expert on your body

Tracking isn’t only about periods—it’s a powerful way to understand your body’s patterns and tendencies over time. This approach, often called personal science, empowers you to become an expert on your own body (1). When you’re logging things like mood shifts, energy levels, or recurring pain, you’re creating a record of your experiences and gaining valuable insights into how your body reacts to different routines, treatments, or lifestyle changes (2,3). By keeping tabs on these recurring experiences, you’re setting yourself up to make choices that align with your health goals (2,3).

2. Manage health conditions with more awareness

If you’re navigating a chronic health condition, tracking can be especially useful (3,4). Studies show that self-monitoring increases awareness of symptom patterns, helps identify triggers, evaluates treatment effectiveness, and reveals changes over time, empowering you to take charge of your health (4). Whether you’ve recently started a new medication, adjusted a dose, or want to track the effects of treatments, Clue Tracking is designed to help you collect clear, organized data to support better health management.

3. Facilitate conversations with your healthcare provider

Having this information on hand can make conversations with your healthcare provider more productive, or help you remember details to share with them. Bringing in your tracked data can open up more meaningful discussions about your health, providing insights that aren’t always visible during clinical appointments (3). Together, you and your healthcare provider can review your tracked experiences to make informed, personalized decisions for your well-being (3).

Whether you’re tracking to uncover trends, gain a greater awareness about your body, or manage a health condition, Clue Tracking gives you a dedicated space to do it on your terms. By logging experiences, connecting the dots, and observing patterns, you can build a clearer picture of your health over time. This isn’t just about tracking—it’s about understanding yourself better, feeling empowered in your health decisions, and creating a personalized view of what well-being means to you.
